Community-oriented programs mark Carmen Copper foundation celebration

Community-oriented activities marked the month-long celebration of Carmen Copper Corporation’s 13th Anniversary last September.

With the theme “The Responsibility is MINE,” Carmen Copper’s celebration was highlighted with its responsible mining initiatives and giving back to the community programs.

The Tabo sa Mina or Market Day in the minesite was held last September 6 where company-assisted farmers and peoples organizations brought their produce to sell to employees at farm gate prices.

The Tabo sa Mina is an enterprise development project under the Social Development and Management Program that encourages employees to patronize the produce of local farmers to bring more income to their homes. The Tabo sa Mina has since been a venue for local farmers in Toledo to market their produce.

The company also joined the Alay Lakad on September 17 and contributed financial assistance to the foundation for the technical training of more than 300 scholars’ out-school-youth in Toledo City.

In the spirit of volunteerism and charity, a blood donation activity, in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, was held last September 22 that yielded 102 bags of blood. Carmen Copper has been organizing blood donation activities in the past six years which earned it a Blood Services Platinum Award from PRC last July 2017.

Carmen Copper has donated a total of 743 units of blood to Red Cross to date through its annual bloodletting drive.

The company also joined the nationwide clean-up drive of DENR dubbed as “Bayan Ko, Linis Ko” on September 23, in Barangay Don Andres Soriano (DAS) Public Market participated by volunteer residents from barangay DAS and Carmen Copper employees.

The activity generated 326 kgs of combined waste from the biggest waste generator in the barangay. The company also turned over color-coded trash bins to promote proper waste segregation.

Meanwhile, elementary and high school students from selected schools in Toledo City had the opportunity to develop their writing and critical thinking skills during a Creative Writing Workshop towards an On-the-Spot Essay Writing Competition held last September 26 at the company’s Staff Clubhouse.

This activity also aimed to increase public awareness on responsible mining when students were asked to write an essay about “How responsible mining helps the community.”

Culminating the month-long celebration was a medical mission last September 30. The mission, in partnership with SM Foundation, was able to serve 335 indigent patients from Toledo City.

Carmen Copper was incorporated on September 16, 2004 as a subsidiary company of Atlas Mining to operate the Toledo Copper Mine located at Barangay Don Andres Soriano, Toledo City.

After 13 years, Carmen Copper has remained steadfast in its commitment as a responsible mining company whose sustainable development programs and environmental protection initiatives earned several recognitions from the DENR- MGB such as the Best Mining Forest Award since 2010 until 2016, Gawad Tugas on Responsible Mining in 2015 and Gawad Tugas on Forest Protection and Management in June 2017.

GCash cautions against gambling apps used for phishing

A recent investigation by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the leading mobile wallet GCash, has led to the discovery of certain gambling sites and apps which were used for account takeovers in the recent surge of phishing scams. Additionally, some influencers may have unknowingly promoted these gaming apps without being aware of their fraudulent nature. GCash is now cautioning its users to be extremely careful when accessing online gambling sites and apps, and to avoid them altogether if possible. In this latest scheme, perpetrators created gambling apps while falsely claiming to be accredited by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). These apps deceive users with a verification process, redirecting them to a fake GCash website or payment page to top up betting credits. From there, fraudsters were able to access sensitive information such as credit card details, passwords, GCash numbers, MPINs, OTPs, and other personal data that can be exploited to gain unau...
