Fuzhou,China-Kalibo flights to commence in April

Another new flight is set to open to and from Kalibo International Airport starting April 2, 2019. Xiamen Airlines will re-open its flights from Fuzhou, China to Kalibo. The flights are scheduled every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. According to Mr. Rene Reyes, Tourism Attache of DOT-Shanghai, the new flight route will increase the seat capacity to Kalibo by 2,160 per month from China that will lead to increase in the number of tourist traffic. Department of Tourism Region VI Boracay Field Office will provide a welcome lei reception to the passengers of the inaugural flight. “In 2018, China topped the Boracay Foreign Tourist Markets with 245,565 arrivals which contributed 38.03% to the Western Visayas market share. Through this new flight, we expect that Chinese tourist arrivals would significantly increase and contribute substantially to the local economy,” DOT VI Director Atty. Helen J. Catalbas said.

National Museum - Western Visayas celebrates Arts Month with UPV kids

In celebration of the National Arts Month, the National Museum Western Visayas engaged in textile-related arts the kids of Balay-Balay Child Minding Center, a Gender and Development Program of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) on Feb. 27, 2019.  Forty-five children, age 3 to 5 years old, with their parents and guardians, spent an hour in the National Museum Western Visayas where they learned about the history, conservation and restoration of the now 108-year-old Iloilo Prison.  \They also learned about the Panay textile heritage when they toured the National Museum Western Visayas’ textile gallery in which Habol Panay: The Woven Artistry of Western Visayas is on display. The kids see the many handwoven clothes that they wear in school activities like the patadyong, habol, piña, and seda, and learned how these are produced by seeing an actual tiral or loom and the materials used in weaving. 

Cebu Landmasters, Ascott partners for hotel expansion in VisMin March 04, 2019

Cebu Landmasters Inc. is collaborating to put up more hotel projects with The Ascott Limited in the Visayas and Mindanao. Jose Soberano III, Cebu Landmasters chief executive officer, says the company sees opportunity as the projected growth in tourist arrivals would require additional capacity. “The Philippines pales in comparison to our Asean neighbors,” Soberano says, citing Thailand and Malaysia as examples. The Philippines has less than seven million tourists in 2018. On the other hand, Thailand reported over 38 million tourists in 2018 while Malaysia had more than 25 million tourists. “Even a place like Bali has about the same (number of tourists) when compared to our national level,” he says. He explains that the country has to have additional capacity to be able to attract more tourists, including the big conventions market.
