Keeping the bayanihan spirit alive to address a hunger crisis

The rising need for food and other basic goods by disadvantaged families prompted many good-natured individuals like 26-year old Ana Patricia Non to put up community pantries in various places around the country.   Designed specifically to help the poor and augment a day's meal for families caught by the devastating impact of the pandemic, the work of these good samaritans spread like wildfire over social media.   As a way of extending support to its customers in need, Globe provided assistance to over 200 community pantries nationwide by leveraging on its partnership with PureGold through the PureGo app.

“This is our way of showing malasakit to our customers.  By staying close to them and their communities, they know we are here to support them.  Once again, the Filipino bayanihan spirit comes to life at a time when many people are finding it difficult to cope with the health crisis,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications.

The country’s largest mobile network operator assisted 182 community pantries in the National Capital Region (NCR), 11 in Luzon, as well as 16 in Visayas and Mindanao.

Most of the community pantries are in Quezon City with 39, followed by 18 pantries in Manila, Marikina and Makati with 13, Pasay and Pasig with 12, Caloocan with 11, and Davao City with 7. Aside from providing grocery items to feed the hungry, Globe has also donated prepaid load cards.

“Being one with the community is a real blessing.    It is indeed wonderful to see people coming together to help members of their communities,” Crisanto added.

The operators of the community pantries rely on donations from those who are capable and willing to share their resources.  Locations of the over 500 community pantries nationwide may be accessed via https://saanyan.github.io/saanmaycommunitypantry/.

To continue supporting the growing number of community pantries, Globe customers may also donate their Rewards points to Walang Iwanan Alliance to fund the purchase of supplies in support of the community pantries. For Globe and TM customers who have Rewards points, they may support via the Globe Rewards app. Just click “Donate” and choose Walang Iwanan Alliance. Each point is equivalent to P1.

They can also donate via the Walang Iwanan Alliance (GCash QR code) For additional hunger alleviation initiatives, donations may likewise be made to Rise Against Hunger (GCash QR code) and  Gawad Kalinga’s Kusina ng Kalinga (GCash QR Code).

Last March, Globe employees rallied once more to fight hunger through an employee donation drive under the #OneGlobeVsCovid program, and have raised over P700,000 to support the hunger alleviation efforts of Walang Iwanan Alliance, Rise Against Hunger and Gawad Kalinga’s Kusina ng Kalinga.

GCash cautions against gambling apps used for phishing

A recent investigation by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the leading mobile wallet GCash, has led to the discovery of certain gambling sites and apps which were used for account takeovers in the recent surge of phishing scams. Additionally, some influencers may have unknowingly promoted these gaming apps without being aware of their fraudulent nature. GCash is now cautioning its users to be extremely careful when accessing online gambling sites and apps, and to avoid them altogether if possible. In this latest scheme, perpetrators created gambling apps while falsely claiming to be accredited by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). These apps deceive users with a verification process, redirecting them to a fake GCash website or payment page to top up betting credits. From there, fraudsters were able to access sensitive information such as credit card details, passwords, GCash numbers, MPINs, OTPs, and other personal data that can be exploited to gain unau...
