Teachers, parents, students expand digital responsibility learning

Through its community development partners, Globe was able to reach out to educate 5,635 teachers, parents, and students from 10 cities in Metro Manila and 23 provinces nationwide on the responsible use of technology since the start of the pandemic.

The initiative is part of Globe’s Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) which seeks to heighten awareness on digital citizenship and cybersafety. It contains modules on Digital Insight, Digital Impact, Digital Ambition and Digital Discernment, and a Parent Module that Globe community ambassadors shared through a total of 155 DTP online sessions.

Globe continues to conduct training of community ambassadors with community development partners, to ensure that the education sector benefits from the online modules. Since it was integrated in the Department of Education’s K-12 curriculum in 2019, DTP has reached more areas nationwide reaching 4,101 schools and providing more than 1.9 million students access to the modules.

“Digital citizenship is critical now more than ever given the increase in use of connectivity to carry out our daily activities,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications. “With the shift to online learning, it is important to ensure our learners are equipped with the soft skills to keep them safe online and address risks on their own or with parental guidance.”

Ciara Mangulabnan, a DepEd officer from Nueva Ecija who is also a community ambassador, said: “DTP effectively teaches the youth how they can use social media responsibly, especially in the middle of today’s shift towards more online interactions. I am looking forward to relaying these programs to more learners in the days ahead.”

Aside from collaborating with community partners, Globe also worked with UNICEF Philippines to create DTP ambassadors among UNICEF staff and partners who can then cascade their skills to peers and networks.

The workshop attracted over 120 officers and staff from the UNICEF network. Some organizations in the network are the Department of Social Welfare and Development, DepEd Alternative Learning System Task Force, Philippine Legislators' Committee on Population and Development, Tambayan Center for Children's Rights, Break The Silence National Network, Inc. and Share An Opportunity Philippines.

Globe also entered into a partnership with the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) and its ACCESS Project to train representatives from civil society, the academe, and members of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) on becoming DTP ambassadors.

The company strongly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 4 on the provision of quality education. Globe is committed to upholding the 10 United Nations Global Compact principles and 10 UN SDGs.

GCash cautions against gambling apps used for phishing

A recent investigation by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the leading mobile wallet GCash, has led to the discovery of certain gambling sites and apps which were used for account takeovers in the recent surge of phishing scams. Additionally, some influencers may have unknowingly promoted these gaming apps without being aware of their fraudulent nature. GCash is now cautioning its users to be extremely careful when accessing online gambling sites and apps, and to avoid them altogether if possible. In this latest scheme, perpetrators created gambling apps while falsely claiming to be accredited by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). These apps deceive users with a verification process, redirecting them to a fake GCash website or payment page to top up betting credits. From there, fraudsters were able to access sensitive information such as credit card details, passwords, GCash numbers, MPINs, OTPs, and other personal data that can be exploited to gain unau...
