Globe drives home broadband improvement in PH

Globe Telecom is on the right track with the steady improvement of the state of the Philippine internet, as the latest Ookla Speedtest Global Index report showed 12.43 Mbps average download speeds for fixed internet, as a result of increased investment and the change in the way consumers enjoy video content.

Ookla revealed in its Speedtest Global Index that the Philippines is showing significant improvement in broadband speed. For fixed broadband, the Philippines average download speed is up 57% YoY at 12.43 Mbps, while the average upload speed doubled from last year, posting 111% growth which now stands at 10.37 Mbps.

The Speedtest Global Index is based on hundreds of millions of user-initiated tests conducted through the Speedtest website and app by Ookla, a leading global company that specializes in internet testing and analysis.

Senior Vice President of Globe At Home Martha Sazon said the report confirms the company’s endeavor to continue improving the state of internet in the Philippines. “We will continue to change home broadband with better offers, more data allocation and overall superior experience. We expect Philippine internet to improve further by aggressively deploying leading edge network technology, to serve two million homes by 2020 with high-speed internet” said Sazon. “We are pleased to see the Philippines climbing up to double digit in terms of internet speed. We are optimistic that as home broadband plans become more and more affordable, broadband adoption will grow” Sazon said.

“Globe is now leading the charge in improving internet at home in the Philippines, as we did in mobile” Martha added. The telco’s plan is aligned with its strategy of focusing on broadband services to improve internet experience holistically, while redefining the home broadband experience of Filipinos. With a target deployment of 400,000 high-speed lines by the end of 2017, the company plans progressive deployment within the next three years until 2020. More than 260,000 high-speed broadband lines were deployed in 2016.

Another independent report confirms the country’s steadily improving internet state. In the Q1 2017 State of the Internet report from Akamai, the country registered the strongest growth in Asia Pacific region in terms of “above 4 Mbps connectivity adoption” at 39% adoption rate, growing 26% QoQ and a robust 111% YoY.

Based on the same Akamai report, higher bandwidth adoption rates more than tripled from 2016. For above 10 Mbps connectivity adoption, the country showed an 11% adoption, growing by 53% QoQ and a remarkable 330% YoY. For 15 Mbps connectivity adoption rate, the country showed steady improvement at 6.2% adoption, up 72% QoQ and 509% YoY.

Sazon revealed that due to a history of infrastructure underinvestment for fixed broadband, little or no support from the government and permitting issues, the Philippines remained a laggard in terms of global average in terms of fixed broadband adoption and speed. “The telco industry had to catch up by addressing the huge infrastructure gaps in contrast with its Asian neighbors. The Philippines is unique in that spending for ICT (Information and Communications Technology) infrastructure is mostly private sector-led” Sazon added.

On mobile internet, the Philippines’ average download speed increased 38% YoY at 10.29 Mbps, while the average upload speed improved by 57% at 5.29 Mbps based also on the latest Speedtest Global Index.
