Following a fire that ravaged Philippine General Hospital (PGH), one of the largest COVID-19 referral hospitals in the country, GCash, the country’s leading mobile wallet, raised more than P1.8 million in donations after just a week-long fund-raising drive, extending much-needed help to displaced patients that includes sick babies, the elderly and individuals needing critical care.
When news of the fire at PGH came out, GCash immediately came up with the #GCashGivesBack donation drive. Through the GCash app, customers were able to extend help using the “Pay QR” option and the Pay Bills option and selecting #GCashGivesBack.
“GCash takes pride in enabling its customers to immediately extend help to others all year round, in a safe and secure manner,” said Martha Sazon, GCash President and CEO. “The speed at which people responded to our call for donation is just remarkable and it just proves that, if we give them a viable platform where they can send donations, people will not hesitate to reach out and help.”
This donation drive is part of GCash’s corporate social responsibility arm, GCash for Good, and its mission to address various social issues on education, environment, health, animal welfare, and more. It’s also part of GCash’s holistic sustainability agenda for 2021-2025 and aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. As passionate financial enablers, GCash recognizes the need to empower Filipinos in all aspects of life, including making it easier to help their community by donating to different non-government organizations (NGOs) on the GCash app.
GCash for Good currently supports donations to over 100 NGO and their causes, such as Caritas Manila, UNICEF, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Red Cross, and more. Moreover, GCash for Good also enables GCash employees to become partners for change through different social activities, like its La Mesa Ecopark Rehabilitation event, which helped in the rehabilitation of the ecopark as part of their CSR efforts geared towards environmental protection and conservation. “Our commitment in GCash is being ONE with the nation in creating relevant CSR campaigns that will help building our nation and promoting social good. We are one with PGH and the medical community in this difficult period,” says Chito Maniago, VP for Corporate Communications and Public Affairs
