Globe’s Community Development Program helps 280 retailers from typhoon-hit communities get back on their feet

At least 280 retailers from communities devastated by Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses last year were the latest beneficiaries of Globe’s Community Development program.

These new Globe partners received livelihood opportunities through a retailer package with LTE phones, SIM starter kit, and initial load. 

Beyond disaster response, Globe provides a more sustainable intervention for communities affected by typhoons Rolly and Ulysses through technology-based livelihood opportunities.

“We’re starting the year by supporting the most affected communities and helping them rebuild their lives. We’re committed to helping communities in their rehabilitation and recovery efforts by including them in our value chain. This makes our intervention more sustainable and meaningful especially for our partners and customers,” said Bernie Llamzon, Globe EVP for Channel Management.

The Globe livelihood program now includes beneficiaries from 62 cities and municipalities in 8 areas devastated by the two typhoons.

At least 40 beneficiaries from Tabaco City, Bacacay, Camalig, Homapon, Malilipot, Malinao, Tiwi, Legazpi, Daraga, Sto. Domingo, and Ligao in Albay; 40 from Aparri, Gattaran, Gonzaga, Lallo, Libertad, Pamplona, Piat, Solana, Sta Ana, Tuao East, Tuguegarao, Cagayan; 40 in Virac, Bagamanoc, Bato, Panganiban, San Andres in Catanduanes and Bulan, Casiguran, Castilla, Donsol, Gubat, Irosin, Juban, Magdalena, Matnog, Pilar, Prieto Diaz and Sorsogon City in Sorsogon; 40 in Iriga City, Camarines Sur; 40 in Ilagan City, Benito Soliven, Babagan, Gamu, Naguilian, Sta. Maria, and Sto. Tomas in Isabela; 40 in Marikina, Metro Manila, Rodiguez, San Mateo, and Cainta, Rizal 40 in Catanauan, Mulanay, San Francisco, San Narciso and San Andres in Quezon were onboarded as new retailer partners through the program.

“Expanding our retailer base also benefits host resident communities as it provides easy access to loading facilities and facilities additional revenue streams for our community partners,” added Llamzon.

Typhoons Rolly and Ulysses hit the Philippines devastating thousands of families especially in Region 5, Region 2, and Greater Manila Area. Based on the situation reports of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) damage to agriculture and infrastructure brought by the two typhoons reached P38 billion pesos.

Of all the affected provinces, Rolly heavily damaged Albay, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Quezon in the Bicol region while Ulysses brought flooding to Cagayan, Isabela, and communities in Marikina City and Rodriguez, Rizal.

As an initial response, Globe provided the following in the severely affected provinces:

  • Dyip Sagip: deployed Libreng Tawag, Libreng Charging, Libreng WiFi stations to more than 80 sites nationwide
  • Relief support to over 16,000 families
  • Free unlimited calls to Globe and TM and unlimited texts to all networks for 3 days to Globe and TM Prepaid customers
  • Free 5GB for 3days Globe At Home postpaid and prepaid WiFi customers.
  • Assistance to a total of 258 existing load retailers in Quirino, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Aurora, Quezon, Sorsogon, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Albay, Rizal and Marikina by providing Php 1,000 worth of grocery packages, SIMs and Php 1,000 work of load as additional inventory for selling.

Donation drives were also facilitated via Globe Rewards and GCash raising a total of Php 23.4M, benefitting almost 30,000 families.

GCash cautions against gambling apps used for phishing

A recent investigation by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the leading mobile wallet GCash, has led to the discovery of certain gambling sites and apps which were used for account takeovers in the recent surge of phishing scams. Additionally, some influencers may have unknowingly promoted these gaming apps without being aware of their fraudulent nature. GCash is now cautioning its users to be extremely careful when accessing online gambling sites and apps, and to avoid them altogether if possible. In this latest scheme, perpetrators created gambling apps while falsely claiming to be accredited by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). These apps deceive users with a verification process, redirecting them to a fake GCash website or payment page to top up betting credits.
