The Medical City (TMC) Iloilo is pioneering another medical service in Western Visayas as it introduces the Non-Surgical Ablation cancer treatment.
Non-Surgical Ablation is an emerging cancer treatment option that uses heat, cold or chemical agents and often performed for tumors found in soft tissues such as liver, lung, colon, and kidney among others, as well as tumors in the bones.
BASED on the data of World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide with approximately 14 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer related deaths in 2012.
In the Philippines, cancer remains to be a national health priority noting that it is the third leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the country, according to the 2009 Philippine Health Statistics.
These data make cancer as one of the four epidemic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) or lifestyle-related diseases (LRDs) along with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and chronic respiratory diseases.
Unlike other popular cancer treatment options, with Non-Surgical Ablation, individual tumors are being directly targeted and destroyed, minimizing side effects to the patient. It is also a minimally invasive procedure, thus, it doesn’t require a major surgery.
Non-Surgical Ablation is being performed by inserting an electrode or an antenna directly to the affected tissue through the guidance of the CT or ultrasound imaging. Once in place, energy is delivered through the tip of electrode or antenna which heats and destroys the tissue. This process may need to be repeated depending on the size, number and location of the tumor. The destroyed tissue is not removed - it gradually shrinks and is replaced by a scar tissue.
With the availability of the Non-Surgical Ablation cancer treatment at TMC Iloilo, Ilonggos (as well as patients from neighboring areas) need not to travel to Manila or even to other countries for such treatment procedure.
