GMA News pillar and multi-awarded broadcast journalist Mel Tiangco remains a loyal Kapuso, renewing her ties with leading broadcast company GMA Network in a contract signing held on Wednesday, January 31.

Present during the contract signing were GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon, President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr., EVP and CFO Felipe S. Yalong, and SVP for News and Public Affairs Marissa L. Flores.

Tiangco, who co-anchors GMA’s flagship newscast 24 Oras with Mike Enriquez and Vicky Morales, has been with the Network for two strong decades. She is also the founder and ambassador of GMA’s socio-civic arm, GMA Kapuso Foundation.

Speaking about her being a Kapuso for almost 21 years now, Tiangco only has kind words to say about her home network. “Kung gaano ako kasaya noong una akong pumasok sa premises ng GMA, ganun pa rin ang kaligayahan ko hanggang ngayon. Unang-una, sapagkat napakabuti sa akin ng mga namumuno sa GMA, at lahat ng aking colleagues dito, mga kasamahan,” says the veteran broadcaster, who also hosts the award-winning drama anthology Magpakailanman.

GMA Network’s top management, in turn, acknowledged Tiangco’s contribution to the Network. “Ang kanyang integridad is unquestionable. At ang puso ni Mel na makatulong doon sa mga nangangailangan ay makikita sa kanyang involvement sa Kapuso Foundation ng GMA. Even after she retired, ang involvement niya sa GMA Kapuso Foundation ay hindi nababawasan,” says Gozon.

For his part, Duavit shares how Tiangco continues to embody what a real Kapuso is. “We are extremely proud na si Mel ay patuloy na Kapuso. She continues to represent what we represent, and hope to continue to represent. At patuloy siyang tumitindig bilang ehemplo.”

Ever with a big heart, Tiangco acknowledges the public’s trust in her work for her continued dedication to the industry. “Siyempre ang pasasalamat ay hindi lamang sa kanila [GMA], [pero] lalo’t higit—aside from the Lord—sa ating mga televiewer, sa mga taga suporta na sumusubaybay sa atin, sa nagtitiwala sa atin, sa mga nagmamahal sa atin, maraming maraming salamat po,” she adds.

The Kapuso News pillar continues to receive recognitions from various award-giving bodies. Just recently, she was named as the Most Innovative Female TV Newscaster at the 3rd GIC Innovation Awards for Television by Global Innovative College last January 8. At the 7th People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) Makatao Awards for Media Excellence held last November 29, 2017, Tiangco emerged as the Best TV News Anchor. And as a Hall of Fame inductee, Tiangco was accorded the Media Persona of Excellence award by COMGUILD at the 12th Annual Conference of Journalism and Mass Communication Students of the Philippines last year.

GCash cautions against gambling apps used for phishing

A recent investigation by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the leading mobile wallet GCash, has led to the discovery of certain gambling sites and apps which were used for account takeovers in the recent surge of phishing scams. Additionally, some influencers may have unknowingly promoted these gaming apps without being aware of their fraudulent nature. GCash is now cautioning its users to be extremely careful when accessing online gambling sites and apps, and to avoid them altogether if possible. In this latest scheme, perpetrators created gambling apps while falsely claiming to be accredited by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). These apps deceive users with a verification process, redirecting them to a fake GCash website or payment page to top up betting credits. From there, fraudsters were able to access sensitive information such as credit card details, passwords, GCash numbers, MPINs, OTPs, and other personal data that can be exploited to gain unau...
