Globe brings 21st century learning, cyberwellness training to public schools in Cebu

Globe Telecom turns over ICT equipment to Cebu City National Science High School as part of its Global Filipino Schools program. Known as Globe Digital Learning Lab, it is a digital learning cart composed of netbooks, 20 tablets, 10 Globe Prepaid Supersticks and 2 projector kits with screens - powered with 10mbps connectivity.

Realizing the power of Information and Communications Technology in providing meaningful 21 st century learning, Globe Telecom brings its Global Filipino School (GFS) program to CCNSHS even as it ensures online health and safety of the Visayan youth through the Digital Thumbprint Program (DTP) cyberwellness advocacy which will be implemented in Mandaue City public schools starting this school year.

The GFS program provides select public schools with infrastructure support and ICT equipment such as the Globe Digital Learning Lab – a mobile cart of ICT gadgets composed of netbooks, tablets, and projectors powered with superior internet connectivity. The Lab can be used to teach different subject matters whether inside or outside the classroom to encourage creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

The program also has a teacher training component to empower the teachers with skills to seamlessly use ICT tools in their subject expertise. In turn, the schools under the GFS Program serve as a teacher training hub for the Department of Education and are responsible for carrying out teacher training to neighboring schools.

For CCNSHS which has 38 teachers and 1,004 students, Globe turned over 20 tablets with mirroring capability for projectors and LCD screens, two projector kits with projector screen, 10 Globe Prepaid Supersticks, one mobile cart which also serves as a charging station, and free 10 mbps internet connection. CCNSHS is the 10 th school in Cebu province which benefitted from the GFS program which now covers 142 schools all over the country.

At present, many public schools are still missing out on the benefits of ICT, prompting Globe to help address the concern through GFS. The program, which started in 2012, intends to transform at least one school in each of the 221 school divisions under the Department of Education into centers of ICT excellence within the next four years.

Based on the impact assessment released by Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) Global Market Research Company last year, digital skills among teachers and students particularly on the usage of mobile technology and computer software, showed marked improvement as a result of the GFS program.

Students also became more well-rounded due to increased engagements driven by various pillars under the 21st Century Learning Framework. The notable increase in the presence of ICT equipment also resulted in more students and teachers now using ICT in their daily academic proceedings and becoming more engaged in the lessons.

GCash cautions against gambling apps used for phishing

A recent investigation by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the leading mobile wallet GCash, has led to the discovery of certain gambling sites and apps which were used for account takeovers in the recent surge of phishing scams. Additionally, some influencers may have unknowingly promoted these gaming apps without being aware of their fraudulent nature. GCash is now cautioning its users to be extremely careful when accessing online gambling sites and apps, and to avoid them altogether if possible.
