Globe begins commercial deployment of massive MIMO to expand network coverage, capacities

Globe Telecom recently began a groundbreaking commercial deployment of massive MIMO technology (multiple input, multiple output) to enhance mobile internet connectivity experience of customers in high-density areas.

The commercial deployment of the MIMO technology forms part of the company’s efforts to further improve mobile and wireless broadband internet experience of its customers by expanding on its network coverage and capacities.
The first telecommunications operator to make use of the technology in the country, Globe undertook early this year an initial testing of the technology in Makati financial district.

Based on initial test results, the technology improves capacity up to 6 times when compared to a regular site.

According to Joel Agustin, Globe Senior Vice President for Program Governance, Network Technical Group, the massive MIMO technology enables a mobile network to multiply the capacity of a wireless connection without requiring more antennas. The technology thus increases wireless throughput, accommodating more users at higher data rates with better reliability while consuming less power.

Over 56% of households have no decent mobile signal in Dasmarinas Village without ODAS

More than half of households in Dasmarinas Village have no decent mobile coverage due to continued resistance of some homeowners preventing the rollout of decent telco services in the area.

This is based on a coverage map recently released by Globe Telecom. The map also indicated that without the use of the company’s outdoor distributed antenna system or ODAS network within the upscale subdivision, only about 44% are able to get good mobile signal.

According to Globe, residents in Dasmarinas who oppose the use of ODAS are violating the rights of other residents. In June 2016, the UN Human Rights council declared that internet access is now a basic human right.

“These people who oppose ODAS in Dasmarinas should be considerate of other residents' need for connectivity and reliable mobile services within their villages and allow telecommunication operators like Globe to improve mobile services with the installation of additional equipment and infrastructure such as ODAS, cell sites and fiber optic cables,” Globe said.

Globe #makeITsafePH campaign: Keeping businesses and consumers safe online

As a purveyor of digital lifestyle, Globe Telecom takes it upon itself to ensure that society as a whole remains safe from numerous threats facing anyone using the internet – from viruses, Trojan, and Ransomware which put multi-million-peso businesses at risk, hacking attempts for illicit purposes, and cases of cyber bullying to name a few.

This concern gave birth to the #makeITsafePH campaign under Globe Telecom’s CyberPinoy cyber wellness program. The campaign covers all stakeholders such as big corporations, small and medium-scale enterprises, government agencies, colleges and universities, and the general public.

For businesses and the government, the unprecedented growth of technology has made data protection and safety a bigger challenge more than ever. This prompted Globe Business, the enterprise information and communications technology (ICT) arm of Globe, to take a more proactive stance.

Startup stakeholders upbeat on Philippines to level up despite fall of Manila, Cebu in Tholons global BPO index

Startup stakeholders have expressed confidence the Philippines will top its ICT industry performance as emphasis shifts to digital innovation instead merely focusing on call centers.

The world economy now gives primary importance to digital innovation. The recent Tholons Services Globalization Index (TSGI) 2017 (Global Outsourcing Index) tell us we are on the right track, said stakeholders of the Philippine startup community during a press conference in Manila on July 4, 2017.
From (L-R): GOAB Panelists and Supporters.  ASPACE Community Lead Micah Asistores, Co-founder of Smart Deleveloper Network Paul Pajo, DICT Undersecretary Mon Ibrahim, Endeavor Philippines Managing Director Manny Ayala, Founder and CEO of MobKard Carlo Calimon, GOAB Organiser Tina Amper, PSIA President Jonathan de Luzuriaga,  Asspociate Director for Business Partnerships and Development of Ideaspace Inc. Goldy Yancha, Director for Technology and Cybersecutiry at Business Profiles Inc. Sagiv Massad and World Startup Report Founder Bowei Gai.

“For the first time, Tholons introduced digital innovation, startup ecosystem, and digital transformation as primary measures in determining top cities for outsourcing.

In its latest list released on June 28, 2017, Manila fell from number two to four as top global outsourcing destination. Cebu fell from the top 10 to number 12,” said Tina Amper of TechTalks.ph.

However, we expect that our standing will improve next year as we currently have many programs in place to spur growth in startups such as this event GOAB supported by the Department of ICT.  Along with DICT's own seedPH, DigitalPH and the newly renamed Digital Cities initiatives (formerly Next Wave Cities), said Undersecretary Mon Ibrahim.
